Nilgiri Winter Frost Black Tea 2026 is an exceptional seasonal black tea from the Nilgiri Mountains in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The Nilgiri region, whose name means “Blue Mountains,” is one of India’s highest tea-growing areas and is renowned for producing aromatic black teas with remarkable clarity and elegance. Thanks to the combination of high elevation, cool temperatures, and frequent mountain mists, Nilgiri teas develop a character distinctly different from the more robust teas of Assam or Darjeeling.

This tea was harvested on January 27, 2026, during the period known as Winter Frost, the coldest part of the year in the Nilgiri highlands. During this season, low nighttime temperatures slow the growth of the tea bushes, allowing aromatic compounds to concentrate in the young leaves. The result is a tea with exceptional fragrance, natural sweetness, and a refined, layered character.

The tea is crafted from historic Chinese tea cultivars of Camellia sinensis var. sinensis, originally planted in the region during the British colonial era. Compared to large-leaf Assamica cultivars, these plants produce a more elegant and aromatic profile with lower astringency and greater complexity. This particular lot is also grown according to organic farming practices.

After processing, the leaves are tightly rolled and dark in appearance, reflecting their rich concentration of aromatic compounds. The infusion produces a deep amber liquor with aromas of ripe fruit, wild honey, cocoa, and delicate sweet spices. From the first sip, notes of dark grapes and dried fruits unfold gradually into layers of mountain honey, fine dark chocolate, and cocoa.

As the tea develops through successive infusions, subtle musky and spicy nuances emerge, adding depth and persistence to the finish. Despite its full body and richness, the liquor remains remarkably smooth and refined, without excessive tannins. This balance of sweetness, aromatic intensity, and elegant structure makes Winter Frost teas among the most sought-after seasonal specialties of India.

Compared to traditional Indian black teas, this lot is noticeably fruitier, sweeter, and more refined. In some respects, its character may remind tea enthusiasts of premium Taiwanese black teas or certain high-mountain Chinese red teas, while still retaining the unmistakable identity of Nilgiri.

Flavor profile:
Dark grapes, dried fruits, mountain honey, dark chocolate, cocoa, sweet spices, delicate musky notes, and a long sweet finish.

Western brewing:
We recommend using approximately 4–5 g of tea per 250 ml of water at 90–95 °C (194–203 °F). Steep for 3–5 minutes according to taste. Suitable for multiple infusions.

Gong Fu Cha brewing 功夫茶:
For traditional preparation, use approximately 7–8 g of tea per 150 ml of water at 90–95 °C (194–203 °F). Steep the first infusion for about 20 seconds and gradually increase the time for subsequent infusions. The tea typically yields 5–7 full infusions, evolving from sweet fruity and honeyed notes toward deeper chocolate, cocoa, and spice nuances.
