Guzhang Mao Jian 古丈毛尖 is a high-quality green tea from the Guzhang area of Hunan Province, China. It is known for its delicate, herbal taste and pure aroma. The text “Mao Jian” translates as “downy tips” and refers to the small hairs on the young leaves, which are a sign of high quality.

Guzhang Maojian is a famous green tea from ancient times to the present. It is named after Guzhang County in the Wuling Mountains of Hunan Province. Guzhang Maojian is characterized by firm and straight hairs, an emerald green color, a delicate but strong aroma and a delicate sweet taste. It is known as the “treasure among green teas”. The unique quality of Guzhang Maojian tea is mainly defined by its unique terroir and traditional processing. Whithering, stopping oxidation (kill-green) and initial kneading as key steps directly affecting the final quality.

Guzhang has a history of tea cultivation dating back nearly 2,000 years. The earliest written record can be found in the Eastern Han Dynasty's "Tong Jun Lu", which covers the Northern and Southern Dynasties. In the Eastern Han Dynasty, "Tong Jun Lu" recorded: "Southern Yongshun (now Guzhang County) is listed as one of the tea-producing areas in the country." In the "Jingzhou State Records" it is recorded: "The seven counties of Wuling produce the best tea." In the "Tongdian" written by Du You in the Tang Dynasty, it is recorded: "The tea buds from Xizhou and other places serve as gifts to the imperial court." During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the "Jingzhou State Records" recorded: "The seven counties of Wuling produce tea, and it is the best tea." In Du You's "Tongdian" of the Tang Dynasty, it is recorded: "The tea buds serve as gifts from Xizhou (now Huixiping, Luoyi City, Guzhang County) and other places." In the fourth year of Tianfu's reign in the late Jin Dynasty (939), the governor of Xizhou, Peng Shizhou, could not bear the burden of paying for the imperial tea, so he led an invasion of Qinzhou with the help of the people of Wuxi.

In 2007, Guzhang Maojian was successfully declared a national geographical indication protected product. In the same year, it received the local standard (provincial standard) issued by the Hunan Provincial Quality Technical Supervision Bureau, as well as the origin certification and QS certification. In May 2011, Guzhang Maojian was recognized by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce as a well-known Chinese trademark.
