Furry Tips from the Yellow Mountains Scented with Pearl Orchid Blossoms – Zhu Lan Huang Shan Mao Feng 珠兰黄山毛峰 represents a traditional Chinese scented green tea combining the delicacy of the famous Huang Shan Mao Feng 黄山毛峰 with the floral fragrance of Zhu Lan 珠兰, also known as “Pearl Orchid” or chloranthus. This style of scenting belongs among the lesser-known yet historically highly appreciated techniques of Chinese tea processing.

The foundation of the tea is Huang Shan Mao Feng from the Huang Shan 黄山 region in Anhui province, one of China’s most famous green tea producing areas. The local mountain environment, with its mists, pine forests and significant temperature differences between day and night, creates ideal conditions for the slow growth of tea bushes and the production of delicate, aromatically complex teas.

The name Mao Feng 毛峰, literally “Furry Peak,” refers to the young spring buds covered with delicate white hairs and to the elegant shape of the leaves resembling mountain peaks. In the finished infusion, high-quality Mao Feng expresses itself through softness, purity and a silky texture.

The tea is then scented with the blossoms of Zhu Lan 珠兰, a plant known for its delicate, elegant and lightly sweet floral fragrance. Compared to more expressive jasmine teas, Zhu Lan feels far subtler and calmer. The aroma is neither aggressive nor perfume-like, but naturally merges with the character of the tea itself.

The traditional scenting process is similar to that used for high-quality jasmine teas – fresh blossoms are layered together with the tea leaves during processing, allowing the leaves to gradually absorb their fragrance. The result is not a flavored tea in the modern sense, but rather a harmonious union of the natural character of green tea and delicate floral aromatics.

The infusion has a pale yellow-green color and a highly elegant aroma reminiscent of orchids, spring blossoms, sweet grains and fresh mountain air. The taste is delicate, smooth and lightly sweet, with minimal astringency and a long clean finish. The floral tones of Zhu Lan accompany the tea without overpowering its original character.

Compared to more intensely scented teas, Zhu Lan Huang Shan Mao Feng feels much subtler, more refined and more traditional. It is especially suitable for lovers of delicate green teas seeking gentle floral aromatics without excessive intensity.

Western preparation:
We recommend using approximately 4–5 g of tea per 200 ml of water at 75–80 °C. Steep for approximately 1–2 minutes. The tea is suitable for multiple infusions.

Gong Fu Cha 功夫茶 preparation:
For traditional preparation, we recommend using approximately 7–8 g of tea per 150 ml of water at 75–80 °C. Steep the first infusion for around 15–20 seconds, then gradually increase the steeping time for subsequent infusions. The tea usually provides around 5–6 delicate infusions, during which the aroma gradually evolves from fresh floral notes toward deeper sweetness and gentle grain-like roundness.
