Bancha is a common everyday tea. However, Sannen Bancha 三年番茶 is no ordinary tea. The name literally translates as “three-year bancha”, and in fact, there are two different ways to produce it: either by aging the tea for three years or by leaving the tea bushes unharvested for three years. Our Bancha follows the first method and rested and matured for three years. Three-year Bancha has a very low content of stimulating compounds, such as caffeine and catechins, making it suitable for people of all ages at any time of the day.
How to properly prepare Sannen Bancha?
It is a very versatile tea and can be prepared in several ways. For example, steep 5 g of tea in 200 ml of boiling water for 2–3 minutes, or 2–3 g of tea in 200 ml of boiling water for 10–15 minutes for a more aromatic infusion. During summer, it is very refreshing, especially when prepared cold, using 3 g of tea per 200 ml of water, steeped for several hours in the refrigerator (ideally overnight).
Japanese specialty: tea with plum sauce offers a great way to fight fatigue. Mash one Umeboshi 梅干 (Japanese pickled plum) with some grated ginger and a dash of soy sauce, then pour the freshly brewed Sannen Bancha on top.
Sannen Bancha is subtle, little-known, but absolutely amazing!

Sannen Bancha 三年番茶 – Japanese Three-Year Bancha Tea for a Smooth and Balanced Cup
Sannen Bancha literally means “three‑year bancha,” combining san nen (三年, “three years”) and bancha (番茶, an everyday Japanese tea made from mature leaves). The name refers either to aging harvested bancha for three years, or to leaving tea bushes unharvested for three years and then harvesting mature stems and leaves. In both cases the three‑year period defines the style and flavor. Sannen Bancha stands apart from standard bancha by virtue of its three‑year maturation or harvesting strategy, its roasting, its high stem content, and its mellow, earthy cup that is exceptionally low in caffeine and tannins. It offers a soothing, mineral rich, low‑stimulant tea ideal for relaxed sipping across all ages.
