Black tea is a type of tea which is more oxidised than white, green or Oolong teas. It is typified by a stronger taste and aroma and has a higher caffeine content. The correct name for this type of tea is “red tea”, which amongst other factors is a better description of the infusion, nevertheless the black in the title more precisely describes the colour of the oxidised tea leaves. In China the term “black tea” relates to teas with an extended oxidation time, such as Pu-erh (Pu Er) or Luk On (Liu An), whilst in the Western world the term “red tea” relates rather to South African Rooibos teas. Under good storage conditions black tea can maintain its quality for several years, and for this reason it was used as a currency not only in China, but also in Mongolia, Tibet and Siberia as late as the 19th century.
